VGTU joins an international project Hyperledger to advance blockchain technology
Blockchain technology is often referred to as the “second internet” and the enabler for the New Era in many other technologies. Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) is working to make blockchain technologies part of the University’s research and curricula. This week VGTU has made a significant step to put this goal into reality. The University signed a membership agreement to become part of Hyperledger, an open source collaborative effort created to advance cross-industry blockchain technologies hosted by Linux Foundation. It is a multi-project, multi-stakeholder effort that includes more than 185 organizations including leaders in finance, banking, IoT, supply chain, manufacturing and technology.
“Growth in membership continues to exceed our expectations,” said Brian Behlendorf, Executive Director, Hyperledger. “2018 looks very promising for production deployments, and I think we’re just on the edge of this technology as part of a new Internet stack that will significantly impact the way we conduct business and society. We very much look forward to working with these new members.”
The agreement with Hyperledger foresees including blockchain technologies into the University’s curricula and development this research field. VGTU Vice-rector for Research and Innovation Prof. Antanas Čenys believes that blockchain technologies are not only for research in IT, but an interesting focus area for research in other fields as well.
“It is a very interesting field of research in social sciences as well, because, in a way, blockchain is a social technology, which will change our behaviour. Therefore, I believe that research in areas of application of blockchain technologies and where this might lead us has a lot of potential. Blockchain in itself is an interdisciplinary subject, for example, finance and IT specialists work together when the technology is applied in finance (FinTech), lawyers and IT specialists – when applied in LegalTech. Of course, from a technical point of view, IT plays a major role, but social aspects, creativity, innovation are the focus of research in social sciences,” said A. Čenys.
