University Theatre Forum reminds us about the defunct theatres
The 15th International University Theatre Forum was held on May 4 to 10, in Vilnius, one of the main organizers of which is the Studio Theatre "Palepe” from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU).
An event, unique of its kind in the Baltic States, this year invited to watch thirteen performances, developed by seven theatre troupes from Lithuanian universities and by foreign guests from Spain, Venezuela, Belgium, Italy and Canada. The aim of almost one week long event was not only to meet the colleagues and share ideas with them, but also to attract young people to theatre.
This year the International University Theatre Forum’s theme was the theatrical reminiscence, due to the fact that in Lithuania the year of 2014 is dedicated to theatre.
"We are trying to draw attention to the problems of our concern, so this year we dedicate our Forum to remember Vilnius’ defunct theatres. There are special, up to 30 minutes long students’ theatre actions, reminding us about the defunct Vilnius University Courtyard, Jewish and Polish Theatres, fostering creativity and desire to learn about and present to others the cultural history of our city," – said Olegas Kesminas, the director of Studio Theatre "Palepe".
A youthful celebration started already on May 5, in the courtyard of VGTU Architecture Department, which for a while became a courtyard of the Old Town of Vilnius, with the Theatre Muse inviting everybody to run, and presenting the programme of the International University Theatre Forum.
All theatre troupes, who came to Vilnius, were introduced, as well as the Commission, comprising competent actors and theatre critics, for evaluation of students’ performances. On the occasion of the opening of the International University Theatre Forum, the Studio Theatre "Palepe" from VGTU showed their latest and the most popular performance "Friends" according to the play written by Kobo Abe.
