The President opens the Science Discovery Day at VGTU
In future robots may not only substitute people in their routine work, but also in carrying out more enjoyable tasks — for example, launching an official event, by cutting an opening ribbon. Robot, created by the students of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU), and governed by the hand of the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė, performed this task during the opening ceremony of the Science Discovery Day.
The Science Discovery Day at VGTU is a part of the science festival "Spaceship Earth" where everybody has a chance to try out the latest innovations, created by the researchers and students of VGTU, as well as to participate in the experiments.
"Both in politics and in life, we are constantly reacting into innovations, because every day brings something new. If you learn to think, perceive and create, you will use this everywhere. So I strongly wish the university to teach you to learn, because this will be necessary both for you and for Lithuania," - said the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė, welcoming pupils and students, gathered at VGTU.
The President not only watched the stands of different faculties of VGTU, where students and scholars displayed their created works, but also visited the Civil Engineering Research Centre, the largest one in the Eastern Europe, and its laboratories. During the tests, performed at the laboratories, various types of constructions – houses made of straw, wood or metal, underwent musical vibrations in order to demolish them.
"The fact that the Science Discovery Day Festival this year takes place at our University— is not accidental. VGTU is the leader in technology sciences, so we can boast of modern laboratories, opening up ample opportunities for research and creative work. Today, our guests can learn about the scientific and technological innovations,"- said Alfonsas Daniūnas, the Rector of VGTU, wishing all students to experience the joy of discovery.
Robots of different forms were exhibited during the Science Discovery Day at VGTU: electronics engineers allowed to try on a special gauntlet, the movements of which were reproduced by the robotic hand, to manage a robot-cat, to learn about the adaptation opportunities of walking robot-spiders. Mechanical engineers demonstrated a 3D printer, capable of producing a wide variety of unit components, products or educational models from the world's most popular polymer materials.
Construction engineers carried out an innovative experiment in loading a tower model - visitors controlled the model‘s load, by applying additional weights or removing them, and the sensors on the screen showed the reaction of the most vulnerable points of the tower.
The latest technologies were demonstrated by VGTU aviators – unmanned aircrafts were flying and their authors shared experience of their design.
The stand of students of the Creative industries faculty imitated a TV show studio, and the students of the Faculty of Business Management showed the world's best advertisements, together with the visitors discussing the reasons of their success.
