Foreign students studying at VGTU teach Lithuanians their native languages
All spring Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) students have got a possibility to study eight foreign languages free of charge. Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, German, Turkish, Russian, Korean and French language lectures are delivered by the foreign students, studying in Lithuania.
According to the project “Multilingual Lithuania“ lectures have been organised already for three semesters in succession. This spring the project is especially popular – the registration for Spanish and Russian lectures have two times exceeded the planned number. Every week for several hours Lithuanian students allot their time for learning languages in groups, consisting from ten to fifty students.
“Volunteers play teachers‘ role in the project. In this new role, foreign students prepare for lessons in a responsible and creative way: together with their students they watch films, listen to songs, simulate real life situations, speak about culture of their country, cook traditional dishes and make a lot of other interesting things“, - Ieva Linartaitė and Jelena Kruglik, students of VGTU and coordinators of the project “Multilingual Lithuania“ say about the project activities.
The lectures are delivered in English by foreign students, studying at VGTU for four years and also by those, studying according to different student exchange programmes. The number of foreign students, who started their long or short term studies at VGTU in autumn of 2013, by 45 per cent exceeded the number of foreign students of the previous year, so there was no shortage of language and culture ambassadors.
“One of the main directions in the activities of VGTU is the promotion of international studies, which proved to be correct, judging by the number of foreign students, which increased two times. From year to year more and more active foreign students come, who are eager to participate in different social initiatives, enriching their own experience as well as that of Lithuanian students of our university, “- says Birutė Tamulaitienė, Director of VGTU International Study Centre.
The project “Multilingual Lithuania“ has been initiated by the Direct Investment Development Agency “Investuok Lietuvoje“ and “Erasmus“ students‘ network “ESN Lietuva“. The aim of the social and educational lectures is to attract Lithuanians attention to the importance of foreign languages and culture. Five Lithuanian universities in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda participate in the project.
