A student, replacing VGTU Rector, is interested in his colleagues’ motivation
On the International Day of Students there were changes in the administration of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) - the Rector Alfonsas Daniūnas transferred his duties to Mykolas Bistrickas, the fourth year student of biomechanics. Mykolas Bistrickas used his chance, met with the representatives of the management of the University, and talked on the most important issues for students: studies, science and leisure time.
Being an active member of students‘ community, Mykolas Bistrickas, acting as one-day-Rector, wanted to solve problems, important not only for himself, but also for his fellow students. He initiated discussions on the involvement of students into scientific activities and on possibilities to carry out common research with lecturers and share their results. The young Rector presided over the administration meeting, proposing to establish Students Scientific Society. The administration approved this idea and even started discussions for preparation of its terms of reference and guidelines.
"Every student enthusiastically starts his studies at the University, dreaming to learn and do a lot. Unfortunately, the curiosity and motivation begin to vanish, usually in the middle of studies. That is why, during that day, I invited the leadership of the University to look for the solutions, empowering young people to join scientific work, to strengthen relations between students and teachers, to establish recreation areas, to make beneficial relations and contacts for future career and to enhance employment. Our students have many ideas, how to solve these problems. Today I became a transmission channel for them, and I hope, that VGTU leaders heard their voices,"- said Mykolas Bistrickas, acting as one-day-Rector.
The young Rector's agenda on Wednesday was quite intensive: in the morning, he presided over the administration meeting, held every second week, dealing with the most important organizational, study, science, finance, economy and other issues. Later, he had a meeting with Vice-Rector and discussed the possibilities of further development of relationship between teachers and students, as well as improving the quality of studies. Mykolas Bistrickas discussed the renewal plans of student hostels and establishing of recreation areas for students with the Chancellor of VGTU, and the opportunities to use information technologies with the Head of VGTU Information Technology and Systems Centre. After the meetings with the administration, Mykolas Bistrickas submitted his proposals to Alfonsas Daniūnas, the Rector of VGTU.
All students could apply for the Rector post, after presenting their short programme for implementation during one day. VGTU Students Union elected the winner for noting the International Day of Students.
